“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” – Joseph Goebbels
It’s amazing to me that in our world, people can still fall victim to obvious fabrications. We have limitless information at our fingertips, and yet the truth so often eludes us. But even as we have more and more access to information, we are losing our ability to use that information to come to logical conclusions. Facts are useless if they are not understood. In addition, the erosion of our logical skills has led to an inability to assess unverified claims. It seems that we can no longer discern wild claims from valid ones, logical claims from absurd ones. We just take the gruel we’re given, and lap it up like animals.
The immigration debate is a fierce one. For the longest time, it has been divided pretty starkly with Democrats arguing for amnesty, and Republicans arguing against it. Unfortunately, the tides have begun to turn, with many Republicans now favoring the amnesty argument. In their little, misguided minds, pro-amnesty Republicans believe that if they jump onto the amnesty bandwagon, part of the inevitable immigrant vote tsunami will go to them. They are dead wrong. Those who receive amnesty will vote Democrat—which is why the Dems want it so badly.
There is an argument in support of amnesty that goes like this: “Immigrants will do the jobs that Americans won’t do.” It has been repeated ad nauseam for years by the left. I’ve never regarded the argument as anything but the hysterical ravings of lefty loons, but now it’s being parroted by some pro-amnesty Republicans. Now that this argument has proliferated, I feel like something has to be said.
Where are the statistics that back up this claim that immigrants will do work that is apparently below the standards of American workers? Are they hidden somewhere in a vault? Where did this argument originate? Proponents of this argument are possibly the laziest people in existence today. It’s an insipid argument.
First, who are these Americans who won’t do certain jobs? Can they be pointed out to me? I’ve seen Americans cleaning the feces off of toilets. I’m not sure what jobs the left is speaking of that Americans won’t do, but they certainly aren’t gross ones or backbreaking ones. Second, does the left believe that granting amnesty to millions of illegals is the solution to this alleged problem? Is there not a single other solution? Consider the words of Republican, Mick Mulvaney, one of the morons jumping on the amnesty bandwagon:
“There are jobs that American citizens will not do. There are jobs that American citizens will not do. We can talk about why that is. We can talk about how our welfare state is broken, how we encourage people not to work, but that doesn’t help the farmer pick his peaches this summer.”
So, Mulvaney’s solution to our broken state is to reward lawlessness? How about we fix the system that encourages people not to work? If we fix that system, and stop people from abusing welfare, they will then have to work. They will then do the jobs that are allegedly beneath the standards of American citizens. The root of the problem is being ignored, deliberately by the Democrats, and out of stupidity by the Republicans. Either that or the Republicans are just super desperate.
If there is any truth to the “immigrants do the jobs we won’t” argument, the solution is not to create fifty new problems in the process of fixing one. We need to focus on the root of the issue, which is entitlement reform. But the Dems don’t want to hear it because they have an agenda that supersedes any actual solution. They advocate straw man solutions to make it appear as though they are doing something, when they are actually making things much worse for the United States.
Unfortunately, the Republicans are stupid enough to think they can out-Democrat the Democrats. Mick Mulvaney is just one part of a growing problem within the Republican Party.
